I have another YA Fantasy book to share with you today called Thimble Down written by Pete Prown.
THIMBLE DOWN is a country village where death and malice lurk the quiet lanes. When the vile, drunken Bing Rumple acquires a gem-laden treasure, violence begins to follow him everywhere. Where did Bing find such a precious jewel, and worse, is someone willing to kill to possess it? In this fast-paced adventure, the village bookmaster, Mr. Dorro, and his young companions Wyll Underfoot and Cheeryup Tunbridge are in a desperate race to find the answer—before death comes to Thimble Down. This is actually what I consider Middle Grade or Pre-Teen Fantasy. It does have one murder in the book of a Halfling but it doesn't describe it or go into any length, it's almost like an afterthought in a conversation.
The rest of the book is about these Halflings, which I am assuming are something close to dwarfs, who live in Thimble Down and one is particular named Dorro is a librarian but also likes to dabble in being a detective on the side. He has solved a few mysteries so when this new one falls into his lap, he is more than eager to follow it through.
He actually has a two new mysteries on his hands, the murder of Bing Rumple and the appearance of a boy around twelve named Wyll. He knows the boy is lying about something but it's not until almost the end of the book that we find out what.
The story reminds me more of a fairy tale like setting with some elves thrown in and the mention of goblins a few times. But it is the character of Dorro that is the most hilarious. He talks to himself quite a lot and he almost talks in a ring a rhyme way.
All of the characters have really funny, fairy tale like names, such as his helper, Cherryup, the sheriff whose name is Forgo and the barkeeper who is Mundo. There is no bad language or any hint of romance, so that is why I am saying it's a good middle grade and up fantasy book that you won't have a problem with your children reading.
