Born and raised on sprawling Texas land, Margaret O'Brien prides herself on her competence as a rancher. But her father believes she's made for more than just dawn-to-dusk work. He wants her to have the love of a good man, to raise children, to build a life. But Margaret gave up such dreams years ago. She's convinced no man would have her, that the ranch is her life now.
So when Margaret's father hires Daniel Cutler as a new foreman, she's frustrated and suspicious. Then an overheard conversation links him with a gang of bank robbers, and she's downright worried. Daniel swears he's not involved, but Margaret's not convinced. She knows the man still has secrets.
But would a criminal be so kind and talk so convincingly of his faith? As a series of tragic "accidents" threatens all she holds dear, Margaret must decide what to trust: her own ears, her best judgment . . . or what her heart keeps telling her.Margaret has always felt like she did not fit in. She thought of herself as a round peg in a square hole. She thinks she's too tall, heavy in the hips and her hair is too red & curly. She also did not like to wear dresses like the other girls did. She actually looked like one of her father's ranch hands!
Inez was their housekeeper and her son, Vincente lived with them along with her cousin, Lewis, whom she loved very much. Her brother Stephen had died in the war and there were rumors that he stole war bonds and hid them somewhere on the ranch. And the sad part is that it was not true.
They hired a new foreman named Daniel and he liked Margaret from the start and she did not like him at all! She wanted to be the one to look after the ranch and did not want outsider's telling her what to do. Her father disagreed and said he wanted her to get married and give him some grandchildren!
Daniel had at one time been a part of a gang and when his mother died, he gave his heart to God and joined the Texas Rangers. He hoped to go undercover and spy on the ranch. He wanted to catch the gang and rescue his younger brother Charlie along with finding the war bonds.
But, they all had much more evil coming and they got caught off guard and tragically someone loses their life.
I am stopping here because you need to go and read the book to see what really happens and I left alot of juicy parts out so you don't know everything. It's a very nice romance mixed in with cowboys and the bad guys all rolled into one.
