VSL#3 Probiotic Review

I have been very excited to be able to be one of the few who get to try this new probiotic that is for patients like me who have IBS but it is also for ulcerative colitis and an ileal pouch. VSL#3 is a high-potency probiotic with 450 billion live bacteria per packet and is a medical food for the dietary management for the above medical conditions. I went to my Gastroentrologist and made sure it was okay to try this and he gave me the green light to try it. What VSL#3 does is it provides probiotic bacteria to help protect the gastrointestinal tract and modulates intestinal inflammation. I was sent 2 bottles that have 60 pills per bottle, which cost $52 per bottle. I was a little nervous so I started out by trying 1 pill a day instead of the recommended 2 pills a day. I have gradually increased the amount to the 2 a day. And so far, I am doing pretty good. It is still too early for me to give you a 100% report. I may come back later on when I have finished both bottles and give you an update. I can say that I hear my tummy making more gurgling noises than it used to. Unfortunately for me, my IBS is with constipation, not diarreha.

If you have any of the three conditions above, please check with your doctor before ordering online or buying from your local store. They do recommend that you be followed by your doctor while taking this medication. You do not need a prescription but still to be on the safe side, just check with your doctor and make sure he understands what you are taking.

VSL#3 works by colonizing the GI tract with optimal quantities and types of probiotic (“good”) bacteria. These bacteria stick to the walls of the GI tract and form a barrier that protects the inner layer of the gut from pathogenic (“bad”) bacteria and other toxic substances that can cause inflammation by modulating intestinal defense mechanisms. If the spaces between the cells of the gut wall become too large, bad bacteria and toxins can leak in, causing inflammation. I know this all sounds pretty technical and I did have to borrow words from time to time because I wanted to make sure I described this new and special probiotic the right way and not mess it up!

VSL#3 is intended for dietary management of the patient who, because of therapeutic or chronic medical needs, has limited or impaired capacity to ingest, digest, absorb or metabolize ordinary foodstuffs or certain nutrients, or has other special medically determined nutrient requirements, the dietary management of which cannot be achieved by modification of the normal diet alone. Patients have to daily consume extremely high levels of protective probiotic bacteria that is needed to maintain adequate and balanced colonization in the gastrointestinal tract, and this cannot be achieved simply by modification of the normal diet. I know, I have tried. There is only so much yogurt or ice cream you can eat! Besides, those foods tend to make me swell so I tend to stay away from them.

I did check out their store locator to see if this is something that I can purchase at the store instead of online and I can, I just will have to drive to another city that is about 25 miles away. There is also a Patient Brochure you can download for more information. You can read all about the research that they have done on the IBS and what role it plays in helping people like me. The shelf life of VSL#3 is 2 years when stored properly and it is 100 times more potent than Align. Please wish me luck as I continue to take this new medication and I sincerely hope that the next time you hear from me, I will have at least conquered this one part of my health issue!

If you would like to order your own bottle(s) of VSL#3 then go to their order page and here's to Good Health!

Mary Bearden personally reviewed these products. I did not receive any monitary compensation for my review, just a sample product. All opinions are mine and belong to me solely. My thoughts and opinions may differ from yours. The photo's used in this review were provided by me and the famous cranky camera! I did borrow one image from VSL#3's site.

Thanks for sharing! I don't have a dx like you, but I take pro-biotics on a regular basis. These seem extra potent..and not really badly priced.
