The Ultimate Prescription Book Review

I have another book to tell you about called The Ultimate Prescription. When I first agreed to review this book, I thought for some reason it would be about illnesses and drugs that could help and also about conditions that doctors don't tell us the whole truth about. Well, I was dead wrong and I sorta got a book that is a little more complicated and took a little more time to read and let it sink in what this doctor was trying to say. I don't always agree with what is in the book but I will let you make your own call on what you really think. As always, I like to write an excerpt either from inside the book or the back cover and here is what was on the back of The Ultimate Prescription:

Many of the diseases sending us to the doctors' offices, surgical suites, and early graves are preventable -- and we don't need to be overmedicated to cure them. Using scientific evidence and commonsense explanations, The Ultimate Prescription strips back the misinformation about what makes us sick. It presents impossibly expensive procedure, but by lifestyle choices made at home, at work and at the grocery store.

You won't want to miss out on Dr. Marcum's explanation of the biblical plan for physical and spiritual health, prescribed by the Great Physician Himself.

*If you can't remember the last time you felt really energetic.....
*If you're tired of taking medications that don't "fix" the problem.....
*If you're looking to beat stress and burnout the way God meant us to....

Then you're ready to discover the true source of healing for your mind, body and spirit!
Now, let me tell you who Dr. Marcum is, he is a cardiologist at the Chattanooga Heart Institute. He is one of the nation's most influential physicians and he and Charles Mills cohost Heartwise, a call in radio program that airs on more than five hundred radio stations around the globe. He is also in demand for speaking engagements. Now that you know who he is, I will tell you what he believes.

Dr. Marcum states that we need to pay attention to what our bodies and what God made us for and because we aren't is the reason we are so sick. Yes, he helps bring people back from heart attacks and many other heart ailments. But part of his plan is to teach patients what God wants them to do and not rely totally on medicine.

He thinks we should drink more water instead of all the coffee, tea, soda, what not as the first step. He says God made us to drink water and that because we don't drink enough is the reason we have so many health issues. It cleans out the system so to speak. Now, some of this I agree with but I would not go to the extremes that he suggests to his patients. He also believes that we should go back to being a plant based society and to not eat any form of meat. After all, isn't that what Adam & Eve had in the beginning? And again, it is hard to argue the point.

But, here is what I think: God also gave us the brains and knowledge to invent medicines that help people and save lives. Take me for example. I have GERD really bad. I tried doing it on my own for a very long time, but the acid reflux got so bad that I was throat would burn 24/7 and it took my doctor almost 2 months to get it to go away with various medicines. Dr. Marcum thinks that just by adjusting what we eat would solve the problem, well, I did all of that. Some days I would eat very little to keep from having heartburn but I still had it! I think in these cases, God gives us the knowledge to help ourselves. So, I agree God is a powerful doctor in of himself, but he also gives us the knowledge to help him help us. Does that make sense? I don't think doctors should get all the glory for a success because God does have a hand in it but at the same time, he also gave that doctor the ability to help his patients.

One other example I will give you and then I will let you read the book yourself and you decide what you want to believe. In later chapters of the book Dr. Marcum lists what he calls deceptions. Here is one that I thought was a little strange: Daylight Saving Time is not good for us because it brings on stress to our body twice a year that could lead to a heart attack. I am like, what? I don't feel stressed out when the time changes, do you? Of course, I have always been practical about it. Some swear it messes with their head and messes with their sleep, but if you change your clock before you go to sleep, to me, it is the same time as always that I get up. I don't look at it like I lost an hour or gained an hour. To me, it is the same time regardless. I don't know, maybe it could stress some people out who absolutely freak on losing that hour's sleep but all you have to do is go to bed an hour earlier and you wouldn't really miss it, would you?

Gosh, I could go on forever and debate all these issues but one thing I will agree on, God is God and he can do whatever he chooses to do. He is our Ultimate Saviour and Physician and has the power to perform miracles. But, he also gave man the courage and willpower to discover medicine and other life saving techniques to help our fellow man survive. God has his hands in alot of things that we don't give him credit for but I think it would be a great mistake to refuse to take medicines just because someone believes just by sleeping more, eating plant based foods and drinking plenty of water will cure us. And in some cases that may be true, especially someone trying to lose weight, diabetes, heart patients, etc. I would also argue though that if the medicines are there to help aid you even more, then doing all of that including the medicines, is what God would want you to do. I don't think he would want us to waste the knowledge that he has bestowed on the very people he chose to become doctors.

What do you think? Read the book and find out!

I think He might be talking about the physical stress on your body by waking early, it getting dark earlier causing you to feel sleepy earlier, going to bed earlier, etc. I Know this last time change in November REALLY did a number on me with it getting dark so EARLY! I found myself yawning alot more by 6pm.

Interesting sounding book!
