Nielsen-Massey Vanillas Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Review & Giveaway **Closed**

Do you love to bake or cook with vanilla? I do and very much so! I like to add vanilla to just about everything I bake from cakes to cookies to pies or anything else that needs vanilla. There is something about vanilla flavoring that just brings out the best taste, especially in cookies! At Christmas I make about 20-25 different types of cookies and I can't think of even one that I don't put vanilla in. Can you?

My absolute favorite cookie for Christmas is the Russian Tea Cookies or some people call them Wedding Cookies. Without the vanilla in these little babies and they would be flat tasting is all I can say. So when given the chance to review Nielsen-Massey's Bourbon Vanilla, I jumped at the chance!

I did not know this but Madagascar is where the best tasting vanilla and most consistent comes from. Did you know that? Madagascar is where 60% of all vanilla comes from! Now, why in the heck did I not know this? It has a creamy, sweet like velvet flavor, that makes it so popular to use in cakes, ice cream, salad dressings and barbeque sauce.

Now, don't think that this vanilla is related to the Madagascar Bourbon whiskey because it's not. This vanilla is named after the Bourbon Islands off the coast of Africa. Shoot, I did not even know there was such a place as the Bourbon Islands! Oh, and by the way, they are Gluten Free!

Besides the Bourbon Vanilla they also have such flavors as Pure Coffee, Pure Almond, Pure Lemon, Pure Orange, Pure Peppermint, Rose Water and Orange Blossom Water. Wow, they even make a Bourbon Vanilla paste and powder that contains no sugar or alcohol.

This is what I found out about their vanilla products from their site:
Wherever you use it, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas will give you the quality, flavor and consistency that good cooks demand. All Nielsen-Massey's Vanilla products are Kosher certified. Extracts are available in four- and eight-ounce bottles, quarts, gallons, as well as 30- and 55-gallon drums and 275 gallon totes. Extracts are also available in 2 oz. bottles for retail. Vanilla Paste is available in quarts. Vanilla Powder is available in 2.5-ounce jars, five-pound plastic containers, and 50-pound polylined fiberboard drums. Vanilla sugar is available for foodservice and industrial use bulk by the pound and in 50-pound packages. Whole prime, gourmet quality vanilla beans available in two-bean vials and bulk by the pound.
I also found out some interesting facts about vanilla:
Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing vanilla to the United States in the late 1700s. While serving as Ambassador to King Louis XVI of France, he became familiar with vanilla beans, and brought 200 vanilla beans back with him when he returned to the United States.

Ice cream was becoming popular before the Revolutionary War, being served in New York City confectionery shops.

George Washington liked ice cream and kept two pewter ice cream pots at Mount Vernon during his presidency from 1789-1797.

Dolly Madison created a sensation when she served ice cream as a dessert in the White House at the second inaugural ball in 1812.
I love finding out tidbits about things and people. It makes more sense to me when I know what spurred them on to do what they did or invent what they did. I think we should all want to know about what we put into our bodies and about the kind of people who brought some of our great tasting food products to us to try.

Lastly, this is what I found out about the Nielsen-Massey founders:
Nielsen-Massey Vanillas. The finest pure vanilla in the world!
How do we stake such a claim? It starts with a family dedicated to pure vanilla products since 1907. Add the finest vanilla beans available - hand-picked for perfection, and the process has begun. Next, an exclusive cold extraction process slowly and gently draws the delicate and distinctive flavor from the vanilla beans. The result is the finest pure vanilla in the world -- perfect for the home cook or the discriminating chef.
