Tortuga Rum Cake Review

I have got a very great company I want to tell you about today! This company, Tortuga is really on the ball, because I just asked last week if I could review any product they wanted to send and it came this week! That was really fast and it told me something about this company and that is they are very Customer Service oriented. In this day and age, that is a rare and wonderful thing. They sent me a mini rum cake to review along with a box of Chocolate Rum Turtles with salt.

We had to taste the Rum Turtles right away. My husband loves Turtles anyway and this was a real treat for both of us. The candy was moist and very nutty and then the rum flavor hit us and we both looked at each other and said, WOW! Needless to say, we have just about finished that box of candy! You have got to try this candy.

You can get a box of 12 turtles for $13.99 and it is worth every penny. I will be keeping this company in mind when doing my Christmas shopping this year for my husband. We are very picky about our candy and when I find one that he really enjoys, I try to get it for him on special occasions. This is a quote from their site and media kit they sent me and it sums it all up pretty good so I wanted to use it:

Tortuga Turtles are like savoring fine wine. The first burst of sweetness is balanced and enhanced with a distinctive rum flavor and salty nut taste for a thoroughly satisfying, delicious finish according to Monique Hamaty-Simmonds, president and CEO of Tortuga Imports Inc/Tortuga Rum Cake Company, whose father founded the Tortuga Rum Company in the Cayman Islands in 1984.

I also learned that when Columbus discovered their island, the Cayman Islands, he named it Las Tortugas which is the Spanish word for "turtle" because he saw alot of turtles sunning themselves on the shores. The turtle is the emblem of the Cayman Islands and that inspired the family to name their rum company, Tortuga.

I love to tell a little fun facts in my reviews because I find it interesting to know how and why companies start and how long it might have been in the same family. I am a big history buff so this sort of thing appeals to me and I hope you have learned something that you did not know.

Next, I would like to tell you about the Golden Rum Cake! They have so many flavors to choose from besides the Golden Rum Cake and I am sure it is the universal favorite and plus you don't want to send flavors because everyone is different and that would be too hard to send.

The list of flavors are: Cinnamon Raisin, Key Lime, Blue Mountain Coffee, Pineapple, Coconut, Banana, Chocolate and the Original Golden with Walnuts, which is the one I got to review!

First thing I noticed right away was the way it was wrapped. It came in one of those freeze dried wraps that suctions out all the air much like you do when you are storing your summer clothes in the winter. I learned they are heat sealed to lock in the freshness and can keep up to 12 months or indefinitely if refrigerated or frozen!

That told me that they wanted the cake to arrive as fresh as possible and that the company really put some thought into how to get their products shipped out from the Islands. By the way, they have stores in the Grand Caymans, Jamaica, Barbados and the Bahamas along with worldwide distribution, food service and a mail order & online sales from Miami, Florida.

Next, we cut the cake in half so we both got the same amount of cake and I noticed it was so moist it stuck to my knife and my fingers! I love it when my cakes do that because it tells me it is so moist and I love them that way! Nothing is worse than a dry cake that you can't even swallow. When the cake hit my mouth, it was so buttery and smooth, then the full rum flavor hit me as I was chewing and swallowing.

Gosh, I sure wish I had more at that moment or that I had not shared with my husband! I can't wait to try out the Chocolate one or the Coffee one. I think I will have to order one of those either for Thanksgiving or Christmas. The cakes range from 16 oz to 33 oz sizes and the price ranges from $17 to $32.

You can also find these cakes in specialty food departments and gourmet stores throughout the United States and the Caribbean by mail order at 800-444-06254 and online at

Lastly, I wanted to give you a few options on how to dress up the cake or incorporate it into something more elegant and mouth watering:

*Mix in strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and serve with the cake.
*Decorate with icing or whipped cream flowers and rosettes. Add candy sprinkles or shaved chocolate.
*Drizzle chocolate sauce on a slice of Golden Rum or raspberry sauce on Chocolate Rum or cream cheese icing on Cinnamon Raisin (my favorite)!
*Heat a slice for just a few seconds and top with ice cream (your choice)
*Cut up chunks of cake and dip into chocolate fondue
*Create Bananas Foster with their banana rum cake (recipe on website)

They have alot more products than the ones I listed and you can find all of them on their website. They range from rums, cakes, fudge, sauces, chowder, coffee, punch mix, flasks and gourmet gift baskets!

The gift baskets look really awesome! I have listed several ways you can get in touch or order from Tortuga and I hope you visit and just feast your eyes on all the wonderful products that are available.

My thoughts and opinions may differ from yours. The photo's used in this review were provided Tortuga Rum Company. I had taken some pictures with my camera but they were really bad and did not do the cake or candy justice so I went with theirs.

Hiya Mary YUM YUM that sounds delicious. I am following you back now on networked blogs, email subscribed & liked you on facebook. Thats crazy what you were saying to me about facebook. Such a thin line they go by these days and banning people isn't even a thought anymore they just do it at the drop of a hat. Sorry to hear that. I guess 5 days isn't too much longer. I always see your name when entering contests. Great to be following you now. If ever you have giveaways and wish to advertise them free on my blog please please do at the bottom of the posts section.

Take care and have a wonderful day
